Meke Aloha Orchids Technique

We offer this sheet with respect and if you already have success with similar orchids and bare roots with your procedure please continue! However, if this is new to you or you have been unsuccessful before, this is how we personally do it. Everyone’s growing conditions are different and whatever works for you should definitely be continued, or continue to experiment until you achieve your personal success.

Our Culture of Schoms & Schom Hybrids

We usually water our schoms 2x a week in winter and often 3x a week in summer (depending on weather) and we lightly fertilize often in summer and winter – depending on temperature and humidity.

Bare roots:

If potting them immediately, we recommend that you soak them first (only for an hour or so) before potting and we use a lightly fertilized solution, or a solution of KLN, Superthrive, or Dip ‘n Grow. I have a few customers who use sugar water or a solution of molasses water. After potting, soak the entire media thoroughly and do not let them become too dry for any length of time. Water and drain them thoroughly every few days until they become established, and only then return to your normal watering schedule.
Alternatively, and highly recommended if you are not potting immediately, and if you have the space and time: soak them as above and place them in an empty pot in medium bright light. Spritz or spray them 1x or 2x a day for a few weeks or more with your solution (above) until there are good new green roots and new growth. After that, they can be potted and watered and drained thoroughly every few days until they become thoroughly established.
Whether potting immediately or keeping them bare root and spraying daily, when you are finally ready to pot it is important that the plant feels secure in the pot. Either use a pot-clip, tie it to a stake, or even cut a stake (wood or metal) and force it side-ways across the pot to hold the plant in place. Schoms and cats like to feel “safe and secure”.

More schoms and schom-hybrids die from being grown too dry rather than too wet – although I do reduce the water a little in winter. But they must always have good drainage!

*lyonsii should always be potted and humboldtii always mounted

Procedure To Root Schomburgkia Hybrid Divisions

1.   When you receive the package with the orchids and take them out of the box, do not expose them to any percent of sunlight; only clarity, because they have been in total darkness for several days and must get used to the light little by little.
2.   Prepare a bucket with at least 2 gallons of water. Pour Superthrive plant vitamin. (If you have B1 you can add a little bit)
3.   Place the leave in the bucket (roots up) to hydrate the leaves. You leave them like this for 3 to 5 minutes. Check that all the leaves are wet; If one of them is a little out of the water, toss the water with your hand.
4.   Take them out and now place them in the bucket in their normal position, that is, all the roots in the water. You leave them like this for at least 15 minutes.
5.   Take them out and lay them flat on a table or surface.
6.   Once they dry, repeat steps 2, 3 and 4. Do not plant them the same day. You leave them on the table or surface overnight to dry.
7.   The next day you repeat steps 2, 3 and 4 at least 2 times.
8.   It is preferable to sow (plant) them after 4 p.m. so that the first hours of the transplant do not add stress (they will have all night to recover) and the next day they are catching the filtered sun as the day passes. Just before sowing (planting) them, you wet them again if they are dry. You can use volcanic rock mixed with pine bark, but the mix must be dry.

Después de poner en maceta, remoja todo el medio a fondo y no dejes que se seque demasiado durante ningún tiempo. Riéguelas y drenélas completamente cada pocos días hasta que se establezcan, y solamente luego regrese a su horario de riego normal
**** alternativamente y muy recomendable si no estás emplazando inmediatamente, y si uno tiene el espacio y el tiempo: remojarlas como se indica anteriormente y colocarlas en una bote vacía en una luz brillante media. Rociarlos o rociarlos 1x o 2x al día durante unas pocas semanas o más con su solución (arriba) hasta que haya buenas raíces verdes nuevas y nuevo crecimiento, después de lo cual se pueden poner en macetas y riegar y drenar completamente cada pocos días hasta que se conviertan completamente establecido
Ya sea que las en macete inmediatamente o las mantenga a raíz desnuda

Y las rocie diariamente, cuando finalmente esté listo para enmacetarlas, es importante que la planta se siente segura en la maceta. Utilice un clip para macetas, átelo a una estaca o incluso corte una estaca (de madera o metal) y fúlcelo de lado a través de la maceta para mantener la planta en su lugar. A schoms y a los gatos le gusta sentirse “segura y protegida”

Más schoms y schom-híbridos mueren por cultivar demasiado secos en lugar de muy húmedos – ¡aunque reduco el agua un poco en invierno! (pero siempre deben tener buen drenaje!!)

*nota especial: lyonsii siempre debe estar en maceta y humboldtii siempre montada

PROCEDIMIENTO PARA RAÍZAR LAS DIVISIONES HÍBRIDAS DE SCHOMBURGKIA

1. Cuando recibas el paquete con las orquídeas y las saques de la caja, no las expongas a ningún porciento de luz solar; solo claridad, debido a que han estado en total oscuridad por varios días y deben acostumbrarse a la luz poco a poco.
2. Preparas una paila con por lo menos 2 galones de agua. Le echas Superthrive. (Si tienes B 1 puedes añadirle un poquito).
3. Colocas las divisiones de cabeza en la paila para hidratar las hojas. Las dejas así entre 3 a 5 minutos. Verifica que todas las hojas se mojen; si alguna queda un poco fuera del agua, le echas con la mano.
4. Las sacas y ahora las colocas en la paila en su posición normal, o sea, todas las raíces dentro del agua. Las dejas así por lo menos 15 minutos.
5. Las sacas y las pones acostadas en una mesa o superficie.
6. Una vez se sequen, repites el paso 2, 3 y 4. No las siembres el mismo día. Durante la noche las dejas en la mesa o superficie para que se sequen.
7. Al día siguiente repites los pasos 2, 3 y 4 por lo menos 2 veces.
8. Es preferible sembrarlas después de las 4 p.m. para que las primeras horas del trasplante no le añadan estrés (tendrán toda la noche para irse recuperando) y ya al otro día van cogiendo el sol filtrado según transcurra el día. Justo antes de sembrarlas las vuelves a mojar si están secas. Puedes utilizar roca volcánica mezclada con corteza de pino, pero el medio debe estar seco.
9. Al segundo o tercer día debes humedecer el medio y las hojas. Las que siembres en astillas de madera debes mojarlas enseguida y diariamente porque no retienen humedad. Las que se sembraron en macetas verificar cada 2 días que el medio esté un poco húmedo pero no encharcado.
10. On the second or third day you must moisten the mix and the leaves. Those that you plant in dried ferns or wood chips (orchid bark) should be wet immediately and daily, because they do not retain moisture. Those that were sown in pots, verify every 2 days that the center is a little damp but not flooded.
